UnionSecure Short-Term Recovery Plan - 65+ Details

Whether it's from an illness or an accident, hospitalization is something we all can't avoid, especially during the retirement years.

These days, with hospital stays becoming increasingly shorter, it's more likely you'll still be in recovery and in need of home health care when you return home.

The problem is that home health care - as provided by a nurse, therapist, or other medical assistant coming to your home - is an expense that Medicare will often impose "caps" and "benefit limits" on.

Additionally, Medicare may not cover the many modifications you might need for your home recovery - like a specially-built ramp, a bathroom railing or other devices to help you with your basic daily needs.

The resulting bills can add up quickly. And when you're retired, it's even harder to dip into your retirement or savings account for medical expenses, much less count on your loved ones to pay all the bills.

The UnionSecure Senior Short-Term Recovery Plan begins paying after 24 hours of being confined to a hospital. And then, it keeps on paying.

Total recovery protection

  • Hospital Confinement benefit - first, you'll get paid up to $1,000 in cash benefits for each hospital stay. See How Much It Pays for details.

  • Home Recovery benefit - if you are sent home with a recommendation for a Medicare-approved home health care service, you'll receive $100 per day for prescribed recovery services, up to a maximum benefit period of 20 days. When you're under age 80 there are a maximum of two 20-day home recovery benefit periods per year, over age 80 the maximum is one 20-day period per year.

This benefit is not based on actual expenses. For the Home Recovery benefit to be paid, there are two conditions:

  • The services must be received within 90 days of discharge from the hospital; and,
  • The insured must have a Medicare-approved home health care treatment plan.

How much it pays

Benefits
Number of Days in Hospital Hospital Benefit Plan Home Recovery Benefit Plan Maximum Available Benefits(per hospitalization)
1-14 days $300 $100/day $1,700
15-30 days $650 $100/day $2,650
31 days or more $1,000 $100/day $3,000

Annual Benefit Maximums for Home Recovery*
Ages 65-79 No more than 40 days or $4,000
Age 80 No more than 20 days or $2,000

*Maximum that can be paid each accrual year. Accrual year means a 12-month consecutive month period beginning on the effective date of coverage indicated on your certificate schedule page and ending on your 12-month anniversary date.

With UnionSecure, your unused days maybe carried over to other hospital stays, subject to annual maximums above.

Examples of how the benefit works

Example 1. Let's say an unexpected illness puts you or your spouse in the hospital for 4 days, and your doctor recommends 3 days of follow-up physical therapy sessions to be completed at your home. In this example, you will receive $600 in benefits.

Four days in hospital $300
Home recovery/Physical therapy $300
Total benefit $600

That's because the Hospital Confinement benefit pays a flat $300 for 1 to 14 days of being in the hospital, AND you receive $100 a day for physical therapy as part of your Home Recovery benefits.

Example 2. Let's say your illness is more serious, and you have to spend 16 days in the hospital. Your doctor recommends 5 days of follow-up nursing services at your home. You will receive $1,150 in benefits.

16 days in hospital $650
Home recovery/Nursing service $500
Total benefit $1,150

That's because the Hospital Confinement benefit pays a flat $650 for15 to 30 days of being in the hospital AND you receive $100 a day for physical therapy as part of your Home Recovery benefits.

Why should I choose the UnionSecure Senior Short-Term Recovery Plan?

It's coverage that protects your retirement and savings account from the often unforeseen expenses of home recovery.
  • Total protection - illness or an injury - from the hospital bed to your own - pays two benefits directly to you - first for hospitalization, and then for each day of Medicare-approved home recovery service.
  • Guaranteed to be issued to you and your spouse - no health questions or medical exam. Even pre-existing conditions are covered after a member is treatment-free for at least 12 months (or, once coverage is in force for 12 months).
  • Never terminates with age - and guaranteed to pay for any injury or illness that happens anytime, anywhere - you have 24-hour coverage.
  • Pays in addition to any other insurance, and pays directly to you - it's added protection that fills the gap left by Medicare. And you choose what to spend your monthly benefits on.
  • Benefits do not decrease until age 80 - then the annual benefit maximum for Home Recovery changes to one 20-day period per year, or $2,000 maximum The hospital confinement benefit remains the same.
  • No waiting period - the hospital benefit pays after 24 hours of hospital confinement.
  • 60-day free examination with a money-back guarantee.
  • Expansive coverage - includes coverage for all hospitalization including Veteran's Administration and government hospitals.
