Whether it's from an illness or an accident, hospitalization is something we may not be able to avoid. Health insurance might cover the majority of hospitalization costs, but it doesn't cover them all. It doesn't help pay the mortgage, your day-to-day bills outside the hospital or extra expenses like child care or a caretaker. Additionally, with hospital stays becoming increasingly shorter, it's more likely you'll still be in recovery when you return home unable to work and may be in need of receiving some sort of home health care. The problem is that most home health care - as provided by a nurse, therapist, or other medical assistant coming to your home - is often an "out-of-network" expense that many carriers will impose "caps" and "benefit limits" on. Also, many health insurance carriers will not cover the expenses for any modifications you might need to make in your home during recovery - like a ramp, a bathroom railing or other device to help you in your basic daily needs. The resulting bills can add up quickly. And when you're not working, you can't count on your loved ones to pay all the expenses. UnionSecure's Short-term Recovery Plan begins paying you after one day of confinement in the hospital. And then, it can keep paying. How it Works - Double Recovery protection - Hospital Confinement benefit - First, you'll get paid a lump-sum based on the number of days you are confined to the hospital - with a minimum stay of 24 hours to qualify.
- Home Recovery benefit - After you're released and return home, you'll automatically receive a second lump-sum amount paid to you based on the number of days you were hospitalized. This lump sum is not based on how many days you stay home or what care you need. It's truly extra money to help with extra expenses.
*Up to $6,000 in lump-sum cash benefits for each hospitalization and recovery period. Examples of how the benefit works Example 1: Let's say you hurt your back while moving a pile of leaves in your backyard into a lawn bag. When you go to the hospital, the doctor has you stay for 2 days, and then recommends physical therapy. In this example, you would receive a total of $1,000 in lump-sum benefits. Your benefit amounts for Hospital Confinement and Home Recovery Benefit are based on the number of days you spend in the hospital. Example 2: You are involved in a serious car accident. You are confined to a hospital for 15 days and once you go home, your doctor prescribes physical therapy. In this example, you would receive $6,000 in lump-sum benefits. As you can see, your benefit amounts for Hospital Confinement and Home Recovery Benefit are always based on the number of days you spend in the hospital.
